Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Facts

  • TMS is a therapeutic neuromodulation system developed for the treatment of patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Multiple randomized controlled studies of TMS therapy have demonstrated TMS to be a proven safe and effective treatment targeted at the remission of episodes of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
  • It is a noninvasive form of treatment which does not cause body-wide side-effects often seen with the use of psychotropic medications.
  • In October of 2008, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave clearance for the delivery of TMS therapy using the NeuroStar TMS Therapy system.
  • In 2010, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) recognized TMS therapy as an evidence-based treatment, and TMS therapy was added to the Practice Guidelines for Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder.
  • In May of 2013, significant research findings demonstrated that TMS therapy has long-term benefit for patients who have previously experienced difficult to treat depressive symptoms.
  • Over 500 locations in the United States which provide TMS therapy.
  • Since it was approved by the FDA in 2008, TMS therapy has been used by over 12,000 patients in the United States.
  • Is designed to be delivered in the outpatient setting.
  • It is not a form of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) which produces seizures as the probable mechanism of therapeutic action. Often with ECT patients experience significant post-treatment cognitive dysfunction which may be long lasting in certain patients. ECT requires hospitalization.

Poinsett Psychiatric Innovations, PA is currently one of only two practice locations in the Upstate which make TMS therapy available to patients. Our practice is now applying the science of neuromodulation using TMS therapy in the treatment of substance use disorders and addictions.

Dr. Gabriel serves is the Medical Director of the TMS Center of Greenville and is certified by Neuronetics University.

Patients do not require a referral for a consultation appointment regarding potential treatment with TMS therapy. This novel treatment approach continues to provide hope to numerous patients and their families that remission from the symptoms and disability of a Major Depressive Disorder is possible.
